Empathy and Social Media

posted by: Bryan Cerrone

What’s the difference between empathy and sympathy? Well, the former is when we feel WITH someone and the latter is when we feel sorry FOR someone. Of course, this is a very simplistic way of putting this, but to empathize with someone is to enter into and walk in the story of another person. That is biblical empathy. Empathy, in general, is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Authentic Christianity vs. Cultural Christianity

Let me share with you a passage I came across this week. It’s found in the gospel of Matthew, at the tail end of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount:

“Not every who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness'” (7:21-23).

The Most Repeated Commandment in the Bible: Delighting In God

I once read in an online article this: “What do you think is the most repeated command in the Bible? It’s not any of the prohibitions or warnings. It’s not about sex, or money, or power. The most repeated command in the Bible will probably surprise you: Be Happy. God tells us more than anything else, in different ways, to ‘praise the Lord,’ ‘do not be afraid,’ ‘rejoice,’ and ‘give thanks’ – all of which are commands, in essence, to be happy… Let that sink in: more than anything else, God commands us to be happy.”
